Landscapes by Richard Harbord

biography

Richard has always been interested in form and colour, and cites as an influence the work of Frank Auerback in his use of vibrant colour and exploratory and intuitive techniques. Richard's landscapes are full of colour and movement as he attempts to capture the power and beauty of land, sea and sky. All his works are painted out in the field, either oil on canvas or Sinnelier and Caran d'Ache oil pastels on paper.

Richard Harbord was born in Rugby in 1966, his family moved to Harpenden in 1976. He went to Sir John Lawes school where his inspirational art teacher was John Miles. Richard went on to study at St Albans College of Art in 1986 (see retrospective), however his career took a change of direction following a decision to study Environmental Biology at Greenwich University. After his degree he worked as a Curator at the Natural History Museum for 12 years and studied for his masters in Museum Studies at University College London. In 2003 he returned to Hertfordshire with his wife Jenny to become an artist and look after his baby son Laurence, and since 2006 his baby daughter Amy.

In 2008 he moved with his family to Cornwall to take up the challenge of working as a member of the vibrant group of artists creating works that reflect the beauty of the Roseland peninsula. Richard has now trained as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher and has now begun working part time as a teacher so that he can renew his artistic intentions in 2015.
